Chapter 37

The Five Precepts

Lord Carlisle was somewhat surprised by the news about Estara. “That slip of a girl is really coming up in the world. Very well. And is that… the same as Mystagogue, Your Majesty?”

Just as Tashome said, it’s an issue…

“No. I am planning to drop some information soon on ranks. You will be a Luminous, above her despite not being clergy. Eventually, we’ll do some sort of ceremony. But it is appropriate, as your extensive experience and knowledge illuminates others on the path.”

“Hmm. So you value natural understanding as well as mystical. It’s appreciated.”

Pulling from her Goddess class a bit, Samantha sent, “Understanding of the natural is mystical, because it is a higher conscious will over reality. Your mind is the seat of mystery itself and by the mastery therein, you protect the soul of our divine order. You safeguard divinity itself, allowing those seeds to grow. You commit this sacred sacrifice for something greater.”

“An interesting perspective, formed with attractive words. I’ll think on them as we ride. Was there anything else, Your Majesty?”

“I’d like you to pick out a few of the most logical and capable among your men to convert. Keeping our secrets is the most paramount thing, however. Think on that too, hmm?”

“Understood, Your Majesty. May your day live on.”

“And yours, Lord Carlisle.” She disconnected.

May your day live on? I suppose in a place where death could come at any time, that’s an apt farewell and blessing.

Merril soon ‘buzzed in’ with a sudden query. “Dax asked me if I knew anything about a System Deck. I’ve also never heard of it. Something about powerful buffs?”

“It’s random. You could get a great boost or you could be cursed. Or die. The one I used it on was able to defeat Danomeir, just barely, but then he got the upside-down Strength card and is permanently weakened.”

“So a dice toss for a chance at a permanent buff? Or for a temporary one to save someone’s ass. Options for the desperate. You could raise up some people from obscurity if you went after and tempted them.”

“I have to live with the guilt if I fuck over their lives, though.”

“So you’re a goddess with a powerful, god-like ability you don’t have the stomach for? That’s irony.”

“It’s not even my domain. It has something to do with the fact I did tarot in the world I came from.”

“And you think that’s all?”

“I dunno. But I don’t want to be some soulless executor of doom and miracles on a 50/50 coin flip. And I can’t separate the temporary from the permanent, unfortunately.”

“Maybe a domain would stack things in your favor.”

“Maybe.” She mentally sighed. “It doesn’t matter right now. Is that all, Merril?”

“Yes.” He disconnected.

Fortune, fate, luck? I don’t know that such things would affect the System Deck. It seemed to just do what it wanted, ignoring us. Play or get played.

The next thing on her itinerary was what she’d been procrastinating. The goddamned ‘homework’, because it came with a potentially important cookie. It was time to get the Precepts done.
